AI search optimization: six levers that actually move answers

ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode all read the web before they answer. This guide covers what to change on your site and off it so those answers name you, and how to check that it worked.

The four AI search surfaces

“AI search” is not one channel. Each surface finds sources differently, so the same page can be cited by one and ignored by another.

SurfaceWhere it finds sourcesWhat it tends to reward
ChatGPT searchWeb search results (OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites for it), plus pages fetched live for a userPages that answer the exact question; well-known review and comparison sources
PerplexityIts own index (PerplexityBot) and live fetches, with numbered citationsFresh, specific pages; forums and niche publications for long-tail questions
Google AI OverviewsThe Google Search indexPages that already rank or are indexed for related queries; clear, quotable passages
Google AI ModeThe Google Search index, with many follow-up searches per questionDepth across a topic, plus local signals such as reviews for local questions

The practical takeaway: optimise for the question, not the engine. Then check each engine separately, because the gaps are rarely in the same place. If you want the conceptual background first, read our answer engine optimization explainer.

1. Structure content so it can be lifted

An AI answer is assembled from passages. A passage that makes sense on its own, answers the question up front and contains specifics is much easier to use than a paragraph that depends on the three before it.

Rewrite one page as a test

Take a service or category page and apply these rules:

  • Use headings phrased the way buyers ask ("How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Sydney?"), then answer in the first sentence under each.
  • Put the numbers in: price ranges, turnaround times, sizes, limits, integrations. Vague copy ("competitive pricing") gives an engine nothing to quote.
  • Add a short comparison or "who this is for / not for" section. Comparison questions are common and engines look for explicit trade-offs.
  • Keep one topic per page. A page that covers ten services thinly loses to ten focused pages.
  • Date the page and keep it current. Stale prices and old product names get quoted back to buyers.

Then test it with questions like these:

  • “how much does a small bathroom renovation cost in Sydney in 2026”
  • “project management tool for construction firms that works offline”
  • “Shopify apps for subscriptions with the lowest transaction fees”

2. Make your brand a consistent entity

Engines need to be confident that the “Acme Plumbing” on your site, on Google Maps, on Yelp and in a news article are the same business. When facts conflict, they either hedge or leave you out.

Pick one canonical version of your name, one-line description, category, address, phone number, founding year and key offerings. Use it on your homepage and about page, your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Crunchbase or industry directories, app marketplaces and marketplace listings. Link your official profiles from your site with sameAs in your Organization schema.

A quick check: ask ChatGPT and Perplexity “What does [your brand] do and who is it for?” If the answer is vague or wrong, your entity is not clear yet. Our AI brand monitoring guide covers how to track and correct those descriptions.

3. Earn citations and mentions

For “best X” and “X vs Y” questions, engines lean heavily on third-party pages: review sites, listicles, comparison articles, Reddit and industry forums, local press. Your own site says you are great; these pages are the corroboration.

Work backwards from the cited sources

Run your key questions, note every URL the engines cite, and group them. You will usually find the same ten to twenty domains cropping up. That list is your outreach plan: get reviewed, get included in the roundup, answer the forum thread honestly, fix the outdated directory listing.

Mentions do not need a link to help. An unlinked brand name in a trusted roundup still tells an engine that you belong in the category.

4. Use schema and clean product data

Structured data will not make a weak page get cited, but it removes guesswork about facts. Match the type to the page:

PageSchema.org typeFacts it pins down
Homepage / aboutOrganizationOfficial name, logo, sameAs profiles, contact
Location pagesLocalBusiness (or a subtype)Address, geo, opening hours, phone, service area
Product pagesProduct with OfferPrice, currency, availability, brand, reviews
Guides and FAQsArticle, FAQPageAuthor, date, question-and-answer pairs

For retailers, the feed matters as much as the page. OpenAI said in March 2026 (“Powering Product Discovery in ChatGPT”) that ChatGPT product discovery uses the Agentic Commerce Protocol, and that Shopify merchants' product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. ChatGPT's Instant Checkout, which launched with Etsy, was wound down in March 2026, and purchases now complete on merchant sites (CNBC, 20 March 2026). So your product pages still have to convert. 5. Let the right AI crawlers in

Many sites block AI bots by accident, through a security plugin, a CDN bot rule or a copied robots.txt. The important distinction is between bots that power search answers and bots that collect training data. According to each company's own documentation:

User agentCompanyUsed for
OAI-SearchBotOpenAISurfacing sites in ChatGPT search; opted-out sites are not shown in ChatGPT search answers
GPTBotOpenAICollecting content for training models
ChatGPT-UserOpenAIFetching pages when a user asks ChatGPT to
PerplexityBotPerplexitySurfacing and linking sites in Perplexity results; not used for training
Claude-SearchBotAnthropicIndexing content to improve Claude search results
ClaudeBotAnthropicCollecting content that may be used for training
Google-ExtendedGoogleControls Gemini training and grounding; Google says it does not affect inclusion in Google Search

You can block training bots and still allow search bots. If you want to appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude answers, make sure OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot are not blocked in robots.txt or at your firewall, and that key content is in the HTML rather than loaded only after heavy JavaScript. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, regular Googlebot indexing is what counts.

6. Measure what changed

AI answers vary from one run to the next, so a single screenshot proves nothing. Measure a fixed set of questions across all four surfaces and compare month over month.

That is what Citedify does. It generates 20 buyer-intent questions for your brand (discovery, comparison, constraints, integration and pricing), asks ChatGPT with web search, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and has an LLM judge score each answer for mention, position, sentiment and recommendation strength. You get an AI visibility score from 0 to 100, competitor share, the sources each engine cited and a prioritised action plan. The first report arrives within 48 hours; after that it re-tests monthly. Where to start this week

  • Check robots.txt and your CDN for blocked search bots.
  • Rewrite your most valuable page with question headings and direct answers.
  • List the domains engines cite for your top five questions.
  • Fix any directory or profile that disagrees with your canonical facts.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search optimization?

AI search optimization is the work of getting your brand mentioned, recommended and cited in AI-generated search answers, such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. It combines classic SEO foundations with answer-friendly content, consistent brand facts, third-party mentions and crawler access.

Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?

Not on its own. OpenAI documents GPTBot as the crawler for model training and OAI-SearchBot as the crawler that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Check which one your robots.txt or firewall is blocking.

Is AI search optimization different for Google AI Overviews?

The principles are the same, but the plumbing differs. AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of Google Search, so normal Google indexing matters most. Google states that its Google-Extended control does not affect inclusion in Google Search. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude run their own crawlers and search systems.

How quickly do AI search results change after I update content?

Search-backed answers can change as soon as the updated page is re-crawled and retrieved, often within weeks. Answers based on model training change more slowly. Because answers also vary run to run, compare the same set of questions month over month rather than reacting to a single response.

Can I pay to appear in AI search answers?

Organic AI answers are not sold as placements. Ads may appear around some AI experiences, but being named inside the generated answer depends on what the engine retrieves and trusts. That is why content, reviews and third-party coverage do most of the work.
