The product questions shoppers ask AI
Shopping questions in AI assistants are not keywords. They are briefs: a budget, a use case, a constraint and a comparison, all in one sentence.
- “Best running shoes for flat feet under $150?”
- “Is the Ninja or the Breville better for a small kitchen?”
- “Vegan leather work bag that fits a 16-inch laptop”
- “Which protein powder has no artificial sweeteners and ships to Canada?”
- “Gift for a coffee lover under $50 that is not a mug”
An AI answer to any of those names a few products, gives a reason for each and links out. If your product fits the brief and is not named, the shopper never sees your store. If a competitor is named with the attribute you actually lead on, the answer is working against you. That is the gap AI visibility tracking for e-commerce is built to find.
What changed for online stores in 2026
Product discovery inside AI assistants moved quickly over the past year. The short version: AI engines now read structured product data directly, but the purchase itself mostly still happens on your site.
- ChatGPT's Instant Checkout launched with Etsy, then OpenAI wound it down in March 2026; purchases now complete on merchant sites (CNBC, 20 Mar 2026; Modern Retail, 12 Mar 2026).
- Perplexity launched Instant Buy with PayPal in November 2025 (PayPal newsroom).
- Shopify added an Agentic plan so brands that do not run on Shopify can list products for AI agents (Shopify, 24 Mar 2026).

Where AI shopping answers pull from
An AI shopping answer is assembled from several kinds of source at once. Each one is something you can influence:
| Source | What it gives the engine | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Product feeds and catalogs | Titles, attributes, prices, stock and variants in a structured form (for ChatGPT, Shopify Catalog and ACP). | Feed coverage, attribute completeness, accurate price and availability. |
| Your product pages | Descriptions, specs, FAQs and Product, Offer and Review schema. | Clear specs, answers to constraint questions, schema that validates. |
| Review sites and roundups | Third-party opinions: "best X for Y" lists, reviews, comparison articles. | Which roundups include you, and what they say. |
| Forums and community | Real-world experience from owners. | Product quality, support, and being part of the conversation. |
Engines weight these differently. Perplexity shows its citations, so you can see exactly which roundups it trusts. ChatGPT with web search mixes catalog data with articles. Claude answers from what it learned in training rather than a live search, which rewards brands with a long record of coverage. Google AI Overviews sit above ordinary search results; our AI Overview tracking page covers that engine on its own.
What we check for e-commerce brands
Every store audit includes the full AI visibility tracking report: 20 shopping questions built from your catalog, category and competitors, answers from all four engines, a 0–100 score, competitor share and cited sources. On top of that we check the product signals behind those answers:
An e-commerce AI visibility checklist
Write product titles and attributes for questions, not just keywords
Include the attributes people ask about: size, material, compatibility, dietary needs, use case. If it is not in the data, an engine cannot match you to the brief.Get your catalog into the feeds AI reads
On Shopify, check that Shopify Catalog and Agentic Storefronts are set up for your products. Off Shopify, look at the Agentic plan and keep your own feeds complete and current.Add Product, Offer and Review schema that validates
Mark up name, brand, GTIN or SKU, price, currency, availability and aggregate rating on every product page, and keep it in sync with what the page shows.Answer constraint questions on the page
Shipping regions, returns, sizing, what is included, what it works with. A short FAQ on each key product gives assistants something specific to quote.Earn a place in the roundups engines cite
Use the cited-sources list from your report as a PR list. One inclusion in a roundup an engine trusts can matter more than ten generic backlinks.
Reachable is not the same as recommended
Agentic Storefronts and the Agentic Commerce Protocol make your products available to AI shopping surfaces. They do not decide which product an answer puts first. That still comes down to the fit between your data and the question, what reviewers say, and how you compare with the alternatives. The only way to know is to ask the questions and read the answers.
Who this is for
- Shopify and non-Shopify stores with a defined category where shoppers compare options before buying.
- DTC brands that also sell through retailers and want to know which listing AI links to.
- Brands that also have physical stores; pair this with local AI visibility.
Several Shopify apps now track ChatGPT product visibility, and they are a sensible first look. Citedify is for brands that want all four engines, the full answers, competitor share and a fix list every month. For the broader discipline, see answer engine optimization.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT recommend products from online stores?
Yes. ChatGPT answers product questions with named products and links, and OpenAI said in March 2026 that its product discovery uses the Agentic Commerce Protocol, with Shopify product data reaching it through Shopify Catalog. Whether your products appear still depends on your data, your reviews and the sites that write about you.
I am on Shopify. Do I need to do anything?
Shopify says millions of merchants can sell to ChatGPT users through Agentic Storefronts, so your catalog may already be reachable. Being reachable is not the same as being recommended: product titles, attributes, reviews and third-party coverage still decide which products an answer names.
What if my store is not on Shopify?
Shopify offers an Agentic plan that lets non-Shopify brands list products, and every engine still reads your own product pages and the review sites that cover you. Clean Product and Offer schema on your site helps regardless of platform.
How is this different from a Shopify app that tracks ChatGPT?
Several Shopify apps track product visibility in ChatGPT, and they are a reasonable starting point. Citedify tests four engines, including Claude and Google AI Overviews, records who gets named instead of you, lists the sources each engine cites, and ends with a prioritised fix list each month.
How often are my products re-tested?
Your first report arrives within 48 hours. After that the same 20 questions are re-run every month, so you can see which changes to feeds, pages and coverage moved the answers.
