llms.txt Generator

llms.txt is a markdown file at the root of your website that gives AI models a short summary of your site and the links they should read first. Write a spec-compliant one below, then copy or download it. Nothing is sent to our servers.

1. Describe your site

2. Add sections of links. One per line: URL, Title | URL or Title | URL | what it covers. Links in a section named "Optional" can be skipped by tools that need a shorter context.

3. Your llms.txt
# Your site name

Save it as llms.txt at the root of your site, so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain markdown file, served at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, that tells large language models what your site is about and which pages to read first. Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed it on llmstxt.org on 3 September 2024, and revised it as version 2 on 10 August 2026. It is a proposal, not an adopted web standard.

The problem it solves: web pages are full of navigation, scripts and ads, and an AI tool reading your site has limited room for text. A short, hand-picked list of links with one-line descriptions is cheaper and clearer to read than crawling the whole site.

llms.txt vs robots.txt vs sitemap.xml

FileWritten forWhat it saysControls access?
llms.txtLanguage models and AI toolsWhich pages are worth reading, with a summaryNo. It is a guide, not a rule
robots.txtAll crawlers, including AI crawlersWhich URLs a crawler may fetchYes, for crawlers that respect it
sitemap.xmlSearch engine crawlersEvery URL you want indexed, with update datesNo. It helps discovery

Do AI engines read llms.txt?

Not that any of them have announced. As of September 2026, no major AI search provider has said its crawler or answer engine uses llms.txt:

  • Google says you don't need llms.txt to appear in Search or its AI features, because Google Search doesn't use it (Google Search Central, July 2026).
  • OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity document robots.txt as the way to control their crawlers, and don't mention llms.txt. See the AI crawler list.

The proposal is aimed at AI agents and tools that are pointed at a site, and it is most common on developer documentation: Anthropic (platform.claude.com/llms.txt), Stripe (docs.stripe.com/llms.txt), Cloudflare and Vercel all publish one. If people use AI tools to work with your product, an llms.txt is worth the ten minutes. If you want to show up in ChatGPT or Google AI answers, crawler access and AI visibility matter far more.

What goes in an llms.txt file

The llmstxt.org proposal fixes the format, in this order:

PartWhat it holds
# NameAn H1 with the name of the site or project. The only required part.
> SummaryA blockquote with a short summary: the key facts a model needs to understand everything below.
DetailsOptional paragraphs or lists with more context. No headings here.
## SectionsH2 sections, each a list of markdown links: - [Title](https://url): optional note.
## OptionalA section with this exact name marks links that can be skipped when a shorter context is needed.

This is the llms.txt Citedify publishes at citedify.com/llms.txt. Use it as a template: one H1, a one-line summary, a few sentences of context, then sections of links.

llms.txt questions

Where does llms.txt go?

At the root of your domain, so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, served as plain text or markdown. The proposal also allows it in a subpath (for example /docs/llms.txt).

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt tells crawlers which URLs they may fetch. llms.txt is a reading guide: it points language models to your most useful pages. Blocking or allowing AI crawlers is still done in robots.txt.

What is llms-full.txt?

A companion file some sites publish with the full text of their key pages in one markdown document, so a tool can load everything in a single request. It is not part of the core proposal, and it is optional.

Will llms.txt get me cited by ChatGPT or Google?

There is no evidence it does. llms.txt is a proposal (llmstxt.org, September 2024), not an adopted standard. Google says Google Search does not use it, and no AI search provider has said its answers do. Publish one for AI tools and agents that read your docs, but to get cited, make sure AI search crawlers can reach your pages and measure citations directly.
