What is AEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of shaping your content and your wider web presence so that answer engines mention your brand, get your facts right and cite your pages. An answer engine is any system that replies to a question with a written answer instead of a page of links.
The term took hold around 2018, when Search Engine Watch described it as optimizing for voice search and featured snippets. Marketer Jason Barnard says he coined it in 2017. Today it mostly means AI answers. HubSpot, which sells an AEO product, defines it as improving how often and how accurately a brand appears in AI-generated answers. (In trade and customs, AEO means Authorized Economic Operator, which is unrelated.)
The answer engines that matter today are ChatGPT (especially with web search switched on), Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Voice assistants and featured snippets were the first answer engines; large language models made the idea mainstream.
The shift is simple to describe and hard to ignore. On a results page, ranking fifth still gets you seen. Inside a generated answer, there may be room for three names. If you are not one of them, the buyer may never know you exist. Compare the question a buyer types into Google with what they ask an assistant:
- “best accounting software for a 5-person agency that uses Xero”
- “which dentist near Fitzroy is open Saturday and takes new patients”
- “is Brand X or Brand Y better for sensitive skin, and why”
Each of these has a single, specific intent. The engine will answer it with a short list and a reason for each pick. AEO is about being the pick and supplying the reason.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
You will see three labels used for overlapping work. Here is how they differ in practice, not just in name.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in a list of links | Be the answer to a direct question | Be named or cited by generative AI assistants |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results pages | Featured snippets, voice, AI Overviews, chat answers | ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode |
| Unit of success | Position and clicks | Inclusion in the answer | Mention, position in the answer, sentiment |
| Main levers | Keywords, links, technical health | Clear answers, structure, schema, trust | Corroborated facts, third-party mentions, clear answers |
| How to measure | Rank trackers, Search Console | Prompt testing across engines | Prompt testing across engines |
The honest summary: AEO and GEO are nearly the same discipline under two names, and both sit on top of SEO rather than replacing it. Our generative engine optimization guide covers the GEO side in depth, and SEO vs AEO vs GEO compares all three side by side. On this page we focus on the question-and-answer mechanics.
How answer engines choose their sources
No engine publishes its selection rules, but their behaviour is observable if you test enough questions. Four patterns show up again and again.
Third-party sources carry a lot of weight. In DataForSEO's LLM Mentions data (US, September 2026), 36 Google AI Overview answers were about answer engine optimization itself. YouTube and HubSpot were each cited in 22 of them, Reddit in 14 and Profound in 11. If videos, forums and a few vendor guides are what gets cited for your topic, being mentioned there is part of AEO.
There is also a split between two kinds of answer. Some come from live retrieval (ChatGPT with search, Perplexity, AI Overviews). Others come from what the model absorbed in training, which is what an assistant falls back on when it answers without searching. Live answers react to your changes quickly. Trained answers reflect your reputation across the web over a longer period, so both on-site and off-site work count.
How to do AEO: answer your customers' questions, page by page
The rule that makes AEO work: each important page should help a specific visitor answer a question or complete a task. That applies to your homepage, pricing and product pages as much as to articles. Answer engines are looking for exactly that: a clear answer to the question they were asked.
Collect the questions customers actually ask
Start with sales calls, support messages, enquiries and the queries in Google Search Console, and keep the customer's wording. For a service business: "Can you fix my problem?", "How much does it cost?", "How long will it take?", "Why should I choose you?", "What happens after I book?". Prioritise the questions your best customers ask.Give each question a sensible home
You don't need an article per query. Group closely related questions on one page (see the table below). Google says its language matching can understand how a page relates to many queries even without the exact terms, so there's no need for a page per keyword variation.Put the answer before the explanation
"How long does setup take?" should open with your actual setup time and what affects it, not a paragraph about the importance of getting started. Use the page structure below.Replace vague claims with useful details
"Seamless onboarding" tells the reader little. "Import your customer list, connect your inbox and send a test message" explains what happens. Use familiar words, descriptive headings and short paragraphs, include limitations and first-hand evidence, and write enough to resolve the question. Google says it has no preferred word count.Make the answers easy to find, read and trust
Use clear navigation, descriptive titles and links between related pages. Confirm Google can see important pages with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console, and don't block AI search crawlers in robots.txt. State your name, prices, locations and features the same way on your site and every listing, and add schema.org markup that matches what the page shows.Improve pages based on what is still unanswered
Track search visits alongside enquiries, purchases and completed tasks. If visitors still ask a question a page supposedly answers, rewrite it. Re-ask answer engines the same questions each month and look at which sources they cite instead of you.
Where each question belongs
| Visitor's question | Where to answer it |
|---|---|
| What do you offer, and who is it for? | Homepage |
| Can this solve my problem? | Product or service page |
| What will I pay? | Pricing page |
| How does this compare with another option? | An honest comparison page |
| How do I do something? | Guide or help page |
| Can I trust you? | Evidence throughout the site: reviews, examples, named people, sources |
A page structure answer engines can use
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Title | Clearly names the topic or task. |
| Opening | Gives the direct answer, including any essential condition. |
| Details | Explains costs, steps, options or exceptions. |
| Evidence | Shows examples, screenshots, results or sources. |
| Next step | Helps the visitor act or keep learning. |
Start with your five most important pages
For each one, write down: who is this for? What do they need answered? Where on the page is the answer? What makes it credible? What can they do next? Fix the gaps before writing anything new.

How to measure answer engine optimization
Search Console will not tell you whether ChatGPT recommended you. You need to ask the engines directly and record what they say. The useful measures are:
- Mention rate: the share of questions where your brand appears at all.
- Position: whether you are the first pick, an alternative or a passing mention.
- Sentiment and accuracy: whether the description is positive and correct.
- Competitor share: who gets named when you do not.
- Cited sources: which pages the engine leaned on, so you know where to earn mentions.
Citedify runs 20 buyer-intent questions for your brand across ChatGPT with web search, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. An LLM judge scores every answer, and the results roll up into an AI visibility score from 0 to 100: 40% mention rate, 30% position, 20% sentiment and 10% engine coverage. You get your first report within 48 hours and a fresh one each month. See AI visibility tracking for how the monthly re-tests work.
AEO for local businesses
Local questions are where answer engines already change behaviour. A plumber, clinic or salon is often chosen from a short AI answer before the searcher ever sees a map pack.
The last number matters as much as the first: AI summarises your reviews for people, so reviews, photos and accurate hours still close the deal. For local AEO, prioritise a complete Google Business Profile, consistent name, address and phone number across directories, and reviews that mention the specific services you want to be recommended for. Our guide to local business AI visibility goes further.
AEO for e-commerce
Shopping questions (“best running shoes for flat feet under $150”) are constraint-heavy, so product data does most of the work. Engines need to see the attributes that match the question: size, material, compatibility, price, stock and reviews.
What to fix first
- Product titles and descriptions that state the attributes buyers filter on, not just brand copy.
- Product schema with price, availability and review data that matches the page.
- A clean, complete product feed, since ChatGPT can find products through merchant catalogs such as Shopify Catalog as well as the open web.
- Third-party reviews and "best of" roundups that engines cite for your category.

The short version
AEO is not a new bag of tricks. It is answering real questions clearly, keeping your facts consistent, earning mentions on sources engines trust, and checking every month whether the answers include you.
Frequently asked questions
What does AEO stand for?
In marketing, AEO stands for answer engine optimization: making your content and brand easy for AI assistants, AI search and voice assistants to find, quote and recommend. In trade and customs, AEO means Authorized Economic Operator, a customs certification, which is unrelated.
What is AEO in AI?
It is the work of getting your brand mentioned, described accurately and cited when people ask AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews a question. Those tools write one answer instead of listing links, so AEO is about being in that answer.
Is AEO better than SEO?
Neither replaces the other. Answer engines that search the web mostly read pages that are already crawlable and indexed, and Google says its AI features need no special optimization beyond SEO best practices. Do SEO first, then shape your pages and your wider presence so the answers pick you.
Is answer engine optimization the same as SEO?
No, but it builds on it. SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links. AEO aims to have your brand named, quoted or cited inside a single generated answer. Good technical SEO and useful content still matter, because answer engines that search the web mostly read pages that are already crawlable and indexed.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
The terms overlap heavily. AEO is the older phrase and grew out of featured snippets and voice assistants, so it tends to focus on answering specific questions. GEO (generative engine optimization) is usually used for large language model assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity. In practice the work is the same: be the clearest, most corroborated source for the questions your buyers ask.
How long does answer engine optimization take to work?
Engines that search the web live, such as ChatGPT with search, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, can pick up a new or improved page within weeks of it being indexed. Answers that rely on what a model learned during training change more slowly, often only when a new model version ships. That is why it makes sense to measure monthly rather than daily.
Do I need special schema markup for AEO?
There is no AEO-only schema. Standard schema.org types such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQPage and Article help machines read facts like your address, prices and opening hours without guessing. Treat schema as a way to remove ambiguity, not as a ranking trick.
How do I know if my AEO work is paying off?
Ask the engines the questions your customers ask, record whether you are mentioned, where you appear, how you are described and which sources are cited, then repeat on a schedule. Citedify automates this across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews with 20 buyer-intent questions per report.
