AI visibility is how often, and how favourably, AI answer engines mention your brand or cite your pages when people ask questions about your category. The engines that matter today are ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. A brand with high AI visibility is named in those answers, linked as a source, and described accurately. A brand with low AI visibility is left out, even if it ranks well in Google.
What is AI visibility?
When someone asks an AI assistant "what's the best CRM for a 10-person agency?", the assistant writes one answer instead of showing ten links. That answer names a few brands and usually lists a handful of sources. AI visibility measures whether your brand is in that answer, where it appears, and what the answer says about it.
It has two parts:
| Part | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Mention | Your brand is named in the answer text | "Popular options include HubSpot, Pipedrive and YourBrand" |
| Citation | One of your pages is linked as a source | A source card or footnote pointing to yourbrand.com/pricing |
You can have one without the other. Assistants often mention a brand because a review site, a Reddit thread or a YouTube video talked about it, while citing only those third-party pages. Tracking both tells you whether AI engines know your brand and whether they trust your own pages.
AI visibility vs SEO visibility
| SEO visibility | AI visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it happens | Google and Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot |
| What you get | A ranked link | A mention in the answer, a source citation, or both |
| Unit of measurement | Keyword position | Share of answers that mention or cite you |
| Stability | Rankings change slowly | The same question can get a different answer on a different day |
| Main inputs | Relevance, links, technical health | Everything SEO needs, plus third-party mentions, clear answers and crawler access |
The two overlap more than they differ. Google's AI Overviews are built from pages in Google's index, and assistants that search the web retrieve pages much like a search engine does. Strong SEO is the foundation; AI visibility adds the question of whether an AI system picks your page, and your brand, out of what it retrieves. For how the disciplines fit together, see AEO vs GEO vs SEO.
How is AI visibility measured?
Because answers vary from run to run, you measure AI visibility on a sample of questions, repeated over time, not on a single search.
- Pick the questions. Write 20 to 50 questions a real buyer would ask: "best [category] for [use case]", "[your brand] vs [competitor]", "is [your brand] worth it", "how do I [problem you solve]".
- Run them on each engine. At minimum ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Claude.
- Record four things for each answer:
- Mention rate: the share of answers that name your brand.
- Citation rate: the share of answers that link one of your pages.
- Position: whether you're named first, in the middle, or last.
- Sentiment and accuracy: whether the description is positive and correct, including prices and features.
- Compare with competitors. Your share of voice is your mentions divided by the mentions of every brand in the set.
- Repeat monthly with the same questions so the trend means something.
Many tools roll these into a single number. Citedify's AI visibility score weights mention rate at 40%, position at 30%, sentiment at 20% and engine coverage at 10%. You can compare what other tools track and charge on our AI visibility tool pricing page.
What decides whether AI engines mention you?
1. They can reach your pages. AI search products use their own crawlers: OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, PerplexityBot for Perplexity and Claude-SearchBot for Claude. Blocking them in robots.txt can keep you out of those answers. Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot does not. The AI crawler list shows which is which, from each operator's own documentation.
2. Your pages rank for the underlying searches. Google only links pages in AI Overviews that are indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and assistants that browse the web start from search results. Ranking helps but isn't the whole story: Ahrefs found 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 (March 2026). Our guide to ranking in Google AI Overviews covers the Google side.
3. Other people talk about you. Answer engines lean heavily on third-party sources. In DataForSEO's LLM Mentions data for US English (September 2026), there were 84 Google AI Overview answers to questions containing "AI visibility". Of those, 56 cited YouTube, 34 cited Zapier, 27 cited Frase and 17 cited Reddit. Reviews, comparison lists, videos and forum threads that name your brand feed the answers.
4. Your content answers the question directly. Pages that state the answer in the first sentence, use clear headings phrased as questions, and put comparisons in tables are easier for an AI system to lift from. Vague, promotional copy gets skipped.
5. The facts about you are consistent. If your pricing page, your G2 listing and a two-year-old review all describe you differently, assistants repeat the confusion. Keep your name, category, prices and key features the same everywhere.
How to check your AI visibility today
The quickest manual check takes about an hour:
- Write ten buyer questions for your category.
- Ask each one in ChatGPT (with search on), Perplexity and Google, and note whether an AI Overview appears.
- For every answer, write down which brands are named, in what order, and which pages are cited.
- Count how many of the ten answers name you and how many name your top competitor.
If competitors appear in most answers and you appear in few, look at the cited sources. Those are the pages you need to be on, or the pages you need to beat. A full AI visibility audit runs this across a larger question set and all major engines, then repeats it monthly.
How to improve AI visibility
- Make sure AI search crawlers can reach you. Check your robots.txt against the AI crawler list.
- Fix the SEO basics first. Get key pages indexed and ranking. AI Overviews and browsing assistants draw on the same pool of pages.
- Check Google's AI setting. Since August 2026, Search Console has a "Search generative AI" setting. It's on by default; if someone turned it off, your site won't appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Answer questions directly. Open each important page with a one-paragraph answer, then support it with tables, steps and sources.
- Earn third-party mentions. Get into the review sites, comparison articles, YouTube videos and Reddit threads that AI engines already cite for your category.
- Publish original data. Numbers nobody else has give engines a reason to cite you rather than a competitor.
- Describe your brand consistently across your site, profiles and listings.
- Add an llms.txt file if you want to give AI tools a clean map of your site. Our llms.txt generator builds one.
- Measure monthly and change one thing at a time so you can see what moved the numbers.
FAQ
Is AI visibility the same as GEO?
No. AI visibility is the outcome you measure: how often AI engines mention and cite you. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work you do to improve it. The relationship is the same as search rankings and SEO.
What's the difference between a mention and a citation?
A mention is your brand named in the text of an AI answer. A citation is one of your pages linked as a source for that answer. You can be mentioned without being cited when the engine learned about you from someone else's page.
Why do I get a different answer every time I ask?
AI assistants generate each answer fresh, and assistants that search the web may retrieve different pages each time. That's why AI visibility is measured as a share of answers across many questions and repeated runs, not from a single check.
Does blocking GPTBot hurt my AI visibility?
Not in ChatGPT search. OpenAI documents GPTBot as a training crawler and OAI-SearchBot as the crawler for ChatGPT search, and they're controlled separately in robots.txt. Blocking GPTBot opts you out of training; blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search answers.
How often should I measure AI visibility?
Monthly is enough for most brands. Use the same question set each time so changes reflect what the engines are doing, not a change in what you asked.
