We analyzed data from over 10,000 AI visibility audits to understand how brands are performing in the new AI search landscape. This report reveals the benchmarks, patterns, and strategies that separate winners from losers.

State of AI Visibility 2026 Report - Data from 10,000+ brand audits

TL;DR

Key findings from 10,000+ audits: Average AI visibility score is 34/100, with top performers at 70+. 68% of brands are invisible to at least one major AI platform. Companies with Wikipedia pages score 2.3x higher. Brands mentioned in 10+ third-party sources see 4x better AI visibility. ChatGPT recommends the same 5-7 brands for 80% of category queries.

Executive Summary: After analyzing 10,000+ AI visibility audits across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, we found significant gaps between brand expectations and AI reality. The average visibility score is just 34/100. Most brands are invisible to one or more major platforms. But high performers prove excellence is achievable—top 10% brands score 70+ through consistent authority-building strategies.

Introduction

AI-assisted search is no longer experimental. ChatGPT has 100M+ weekly users. Perplexity is the fastest-growing search platform. Google AI Overviews appear in 30%+ of searches. Buyers increasingly ask AI for recommendations rather than scrolling through search results.

But how are brands actually performing in this new landscape?

We analyzed data from over 10,000 AI visibility audits conducted through the Citedify platform between September 2025 and January 2026. This report shares what we found: the benchmarks, the patterns, and the strategies that work.

Methodology

Data Collection

  • 10,247 AI visibility audits analyzed
  • 20+ prompts tested per audit across buying journey stages
  • 4 AI platforms measured: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews
  • Industries represented: SaaS, e-commerce, professional services, healthcare, finance, and 47 other verticals
  • Company sizes: Startups to enterprises across all stages

Metrics Measured

For each audit, we measured:

  • Mention rate: Percentage of prompts where the brand appeared
  • Position quality: Primary recommendation, alternative, or mentioned
  • Sentiment: Positive, neutral, or negative description
  • Platform coverage: Visibility consistency across all four platforms
  • Competitor comparison: Relative performance against competitors

AI Visibility Score

The AI Visibility Score (0-100) is calculated as:

  • Mention Rate: 40%
  • Position Quality: 30%
  • Sentiment: 20%
  • Platform Coverage: 10%

Key Findings

Finding 1: Most Brands Have Low AI Visibility

The average AI visibility score is just 34 out of 100.

Distribution of scores:

  • 0-20 (Invisible): 31% of brands
  • 21-40 (Low): 35% of brands
  • 41-60 (Moderate): 22% of brands
  • 61-80 (Good): 9% of brands
  • 81-100 (Excellent): 3% of brands

Insight: Nearly two-thirds of brands (66%) score below 40, meaning AI systems rarely or never recommend them. This represents a massive visibility gap as buyer behavior shifts toward AI-assisted research.

Finding 2: Platform Coverage is Inconsistent

68% of brands are invisible to at least one major AI platform.

Platform-specific visibility rates:

  • ChatGPT: 47% of brands mentioned at least once
  • Perplexity: 52% of brands mentioned at least once
  • Claude: 38% of brands mentioned at least once
  • Google AI Overviews: 44% of brands mentioned at least once

All four platforms: Only 19% of brands were mentioned across all four platforms.

Insight: Optimizing for just one platform isn't enough. Each AI system has different knowledge bases and retrieval mechanisms. Comprehensive strategies perform best.

Finding 3: A Small Set of Brands Dominates Each Category

For 80% of category queries, the same 5-7 brands are recommended.

In each industry category we analyzed:

  • Top 3 brands captured 60% of primary recommendations
  • Top 10 brands captured 92% of all mentions
  • Long-tail brands rarely appeared in AI responses

Insight: AI recommendations follow a power law distribution. Category leaders maintain significant advantages, but positions aren't permanent—we observed meaningful movement in rankings quarter-over-quarter.

Finding 4: Wikipedia Presence Correlates Strongly with AI Visibility

Brands with Wikipedia articles score 2.3x higher on average.

Wikipedia impact:

  • With Wikipedia: Average score 56
  • Without Wikipedia: Average score 24

This correlation was consistent across company sizes, suggesting Wikipedia presence is a strong authority signal for AI systems regardless of brand scale.

Insight: Wikipedia remains one of the highest-impact authority signals for AI visibility. For notable brands, creating or improving a Wikipedia article should be a priority.

Finding 5: Third-Party Mentions are the Strongest Predictor

Brands mentioned in 10+ third-party sources see 4x higher AI visibility.

Third-party mention impact:

  • 0-2 mentions: Average score 18
  • 3-5 mentions: Average score 32
  • 6-9 mentions: Average score 48
  • 10+ mentions: Average score 72

Sources that matter most:

  1. Industry publications
  2. "Best of" and comparison articles
  3. Review platforms (G2, Capterra, TrustPilot)
  4. Reddit discussions
  5. News coverage

Insight: AI systems weight third-party validation heavily. Building presence on trusted external sites is more impactful than on-site optimization alone.

Finding 6: Recency Matters for Perplexity and ChatGPT

Brands with content updated in the last 90 days score 1.8x higher on Perplexity.

For platforms with web search capabilities (Perplexity, ChatGPT with browse):

  • Recent updates improve retrieval likelihood
  • Fresh content signals active, relevant brands
  • Outdated content may be deprioritized

For Claude (primarily training data):

  • Content age matters less
  • Training cutoff determines knowledge
  • Historical presence still important

Insight: Content freshness strategies should differ by platform. Perplexity and ChatGPT reward recent updates; Claude requires building long-term presence in training sources.

Finding 7: Structured Content Improves Citation Rates

Pages with FAQ schema are cited 2.1x more often than similar pages without.

Content structure impact:

  • FAQ schema: +110% citation rate
  • Clear H2 headers matching questions: +65% citation rate
  • Comparison tables: +85% citation rate
  • Bullet/numbered lists: +45% citation rate

Insight: AI systems parse structured content more effectively. FAQ sections, comparison tables, and clear hierarchies improve the likelihood of being cited.

Finding 8: Sentiment is Largely Positive (With Caveats)

When brands are mentioned, sentiment is positive 72% of the time.

Sentiment distribution across mentions:

  • Positive: 72%
  • Neutral: 23%
  • Negative: 5%

However, sentiment varied significantly by:

  • Review platform ratings (lower ratings = more negative AI sentiment)
  • Recent news coverage (negative PR surfaces quickly)
  • User-generated content (complaints appear in AI responses)

Insight: AI systems generally describe mentioned brands positively, but they do surface criticism when it exists in source material. Reputation management remains important.
