Short answer: ChatGPT Instant Checkout, the feature that let shoppers pay without leaving the chat, is gone. In March 2026 OpenAI switched to letting merchants use their own checkout while ChatGPT concentrates on product discovery. Today, ChatGPT shopping has two separate routes for merchants: organic product discovery, fed by product feeds and Shopify Catalog, and paid placement through ChatGPT Ads. OpenAI says ads do not change the answers, so being recommended and being advertised are two different problems.
If you want the full explainer on how ChatGPT shopping works, start with our ChatGPT shopping guide. This post covers what changed after Instant Checkout, and what it means for your feeds and your ad budget, as of September 2026.
What happened to Instant Checkout
OpenAI announced the change on 24 March 2026 in a post titled "Powering Product Discovery in ChatGPT". It said the initial version of Instant Checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we're allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery" (source). CNBC covered the change the same day (source).
Why the change? OpenAI's post talks about flexibility. PPC Land, reporting on 17 September 2026, said Instant Checkout shut in March after Walmart disclosed three times lower conversion for in-chat purchases (source). That is PPC Land's account of the sequence; OpenAI's own announcement does not give that reason.
What replaced it:
- Merchants' own checkout. Shoppers click through and pay on the merchant's site. Shopify's Mani Fazeli, quoted in OpenAI's post, said buyers "can complete purchases on the merchant's online store through an in-app browser."
- ChatGPT apps. OpenAI said merchants wanting deeper integrations can still build ChatGPT apps, and announced a Walmart app that takes users from discovery into a Walmart environment with account linking, loyalty and Walmart payments.
So when people search "ChatGPT instant checkout" today, the honest answer is: it no longer exists in its original form. The buying still happens, just on your site.
How products appear in ChatGPT now
OpenAI's March post describes richer shopping inside ChatGPT: visual browsing, side-by-side comparisons with price, reviews and features, and conversational refinement. It said the update was rolling out to Free, Go, Plus and Pro users (source).
To power it, OpenAI expanded the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) to cover product discovery. In OpenAI's words: "Through ACP, merchants share product feeds and promotions so their catalogs are fully represented in ChatGPT." It named Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot and Wayfair as retailers already integrated into ACP for discovery, and said feeds can also be delivered through third-party providers such as Salesforce and Stripe.
The important point: a feed makes your products eligible and accurately described. It doesn't guarantee ChatGPT picks them. When someone asks for "a waterproof hiking jacket under a certain budget for wet climates", ChatGPT still decides which products fit and how to rank them. Complete, accurate product data helps it match you to specific questions. Reviews, comparisons and what the wider web says about your products shape whether you are the one it recommends.

Product feeds: organic vs Ads Manager
There are now two feed-related paths into ChatGPT, and they do different jobs.
| Organic product discovery | ChatGPT Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Products eligible to appear in ChatGPT's answers | Paid placements shown alongside answers |
| How products get in | Feeds and promotions via ACP, third-party providers, or Shopify Catalog | Product feeds managed in Ads Manager, or the Shopify ChatGPT Ads app |
| Affects the answer? | Yes, this is the answer | OpenAI says advertising does not influence the answers |
| Cost | No fee described in OpenAI's March announcement | Paid advertising |
| Who controls ranking | ChatGPT | Ad auction and targeting |
On the ads side, PPC Land reported on 17 September 2026 that product feeds moved into Ads Manager in June, supporting up to one million SKUs, and that shopping carousels make up roughly 23% of US desktop ChatGPT ads, according to a Sensor Tower estimate (source). The carousel figure is a third-party estimate.
OpenAI's public posts don't spell out in detail how the ads feed and the organic discovery feed relate. If you run both, check OpenAI's merchant information for your setup rather than assuming one feed covers both.
Feed hygiene that helps both routes:
- Use product titles that say what the product is, not just the brand name.
- Fill in the attributes shoppers ask about: size, material, compatibility, use case.
- Keep price and availability current, since answers show them side by side.
- Include promotions through the feed where supported, since OpenAI says feeds can carry them.
A quick test: read one of your product titles and its attributes as if you were ChatGPT answering a specific question. "Trail Runner 2" tells a model very little. "Trail Runner 2 women's waterproof trail running shoe, wide fit" plus attributes for drop, weight and terrain gives it enough to match the product to someone asking for a wide, waterproof trail shoe. The model can only recommend what it can confidently describe.
Shopify Catalog and the Ads app
Shopify merchants have the easiest path on both sides.
Organic. OpenAI said in March that "for merchants on Shopify, product data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog" and "no additional work is required from individual merchants" (source). If you are on Shopify, your products are likely already eligible. Your work is making the product data good enough to be chosen.
Paid. OpenAI announced on 16 September 2026 that Shopify products flow into ChatGPT Ads through Shopify Catalog, with a ChatGPT Ads app for US Shopify merchants going international from 23 September (source). PPC Land reported that the app was listed on 3 September, is free to install, and installs a Shopify server pixel (source). The app is free; the ads you run through it are not.

Ads vs organic answers
This is the part that matters most for your budget.
OpenAI said on 23 September 2026, announcing that ChatGPT ads are now in more than 60 countries on the Free and Go plans, that "advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides" (source).
Take that at face value and the consequence is clear. Buying ads gets you a sponsored placement next to the answer. It does not make ChatGPT recommend you in the answer. If a shopper asks "what's the best running shoe for flat feet" and ChatGPT names three competitors, your ad may sit beside that answer, but the answer itself still recommends someone else.
That leads to a sensible order of operations:
- Find out whether ChatGPT recommends you organically for the questions that matter to your category.
- Fix the gaps with better product data, clearer product and comparison pages, and more reviews and third-party coverage.
- Use ads to fill specific gaps where you can't win the organic answer yet, or to add reach where you already do.

Tracking whether ChatGPT recommends you
Ad platforms report on ads. Nothing in Ads Manager tells you how often ChatGPT recommends your products in organic answers, which competitors it names instead, or why.
You can check by hand: write 10 to 20 real buyer questions, ask them in ChatGPT with search on, and record who gets named. Repeat monthly on the same questions. Answers vary between runs, so one check is a snapshot, not a verdict.
Citedify does this systematically. For e-commerce brands, it asks ChatGPT (with web search), Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews 20 buyer-intent questions for your brand, records every answer, and scores mention, position, sentiment and recommendation strength into a 0 to 100 visibility score. It shows which competitors are recommended instead of you and which sources the AI cites, then gives a prioritised fix list. The first report arrives within 48 hours and it re-tests monthly, so you can see whether feed and content changes move the numbers. More on the method in AI visibility tracking.
Key takeaways
