If you run a US Shopify store, AI checkout may already be on. In September 2026, eligible stores were automatically enrolled in native checkout inside Google AI Mode and the Gemini app, so shoppers can buy your products without visiting your site. At the same time OpenAI launched a ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify, and Shopify agreed to bring Shop Pay to Meta's Muse agent.
None of this required you to click anything. This guide explains what is switched on, where to turn it off, what to fix in your product data, and how to check whether AI engines actually recommend your products, which is the step that decides whether any of this checkout plumbing gets used.
What changed in September 2026
Shopify has been expanding what it calls Agentic Storefronts, a set of channels that make your catalogue available to AI shopping experiences (Search Engine Land, 22 September 2026). Three developments landed within two weeks:
| Surface | What changed | Default | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Native checkout for eligible Shopify products | On for eligible stores | US |
| ChatGPT | Free ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify | Off (you install it) | US, then international from 23 Sept |
| Meta Muse | Shop Pay checkout partnership | Announced; Shop Pay listed as "coming soon" by Meta | US |
The rest of this guide takes each in turn.
Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout (auto-enrolled)
Search Engine Land reported that Google is notifying eligible Shopify merchants that their products can now be bought directly in AI Mode and the Gemini app, and that Shopify says this is activated by default for eligible stores (Search Engine Land, 22 September 2026).
Who is eligible, per the same report:
- Your business is based in the US and sells to US customers.
- You have a valid Google Merchant Center account, matched to your Shopify store.
- You make eligible products available through Merchant Center, for example via Shopify's Google & YouTube channel or another feed.
The checkout runs on Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Google says UCP already enables direct checkout for "hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers" (Google, 16 September 2026).
What doesn't carry over. Search Engine Land notes that, according to Shopify, some features are not supported in the direct checkout experience, including certain checkout blocks, product bundles, custom pixels and Google Analytics client-side tracking. If you rely on any of those, expect gaps in your reporting for orders that complete inside Google's AI surfaces.
The ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify
OpenAI took a different route. It dropped in-chat checkout earlier this year, and on 16 September 2026 announced that US Shopify merchants can use a new ChatGPT Ads app to create and manage ad campaigns, with international availability from 23 September in markets where ChatGPT Ads run (OpenAI, 16 September 2026).
PPC Land reviewed the App Store listing and reported that the app was released on 3 September, is free to install, and automatically installs a Shopify server pixel for conversion tracking (PPC Land, 17 September 2026).
Two things to keep in mind:
- The app itself is free, but the ads are not. You pay for the campaigns you run.
- These are ads. OpenAI says advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT gives (OpenAI, 23 September 2026). Installing the app will not make ChatGPT recommend your products in its own answers.

Meta Muse and Shop Pay
Meta introduced Muse on 8 September 2026 as a personal AI agent in the US that can open a browser, fill in forms and buy things using Link by Stripe, with Shop Pay "coming soon" (Meta, 8 September 2026). PYMNTS then reported that Shopify and Meta had partnered on Muse checkout through Shop Pay (PYMNTS, 22 September 2026).
In the same report, Shopify said shoppers who start in an AI chatbot are 2.5 times more likely to reach a product page, with about an 80% conversion uplift. These are Shopify's own figures, so treat them as directional rather than a benchmark for your store.
There is no Muse-specific setting in Shopify that we have been able to confirm as of September 2026. If that changes, it will most likely appear alongside the other agentic channels.
Opting out: Sales channels > Agentic
For Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout, Shopify lets you disable direct checkout under Sales channels > Agentic, according to Search Engine Land. Opting out does not remove your products from Google's AI experiences. Shoppers can still discover them in AI Mode and Gemini, but they are sent to your own website to finish the purchase (Search Engine Land, 22 September 2026).
Reasons you might opt out:
- You rely on product bundles, custom checkout blocks or custom pixels that don't carry over.
- You need complete Google Analytics tracking for every order.
- You want upsells, subscriptions or post-purchase flows that only run on your own checkout.
Reasons you might leave it on:
- Fewer steps between recommendation and payment.
- You remain the merchant with the customer and order relationship.
- Your checkout is simple and your products are straightforward to buy.
Either choice is reasonable. The mistake is not knowing which one you have made.
Feed and attribute fixes
Whether a shopper completes the purchase in Google or on your site, AI surfaces use your product data to decide what to show. Google's 16 September update points at a few specific levers (Google):
- Conversational attributes. Extra product context written for conversational queries. In testing with lululemon, Google said the brand's conversational attributes were incorporated 50% of the time in relevant AI Mode product recommendations.
- Video link attribute. Links product videos so Google can build visual, shoppable formats.
- Loyalty data. Connecting loyalty programmes in Merchant Center shows member pricing and perks across Google.
- Feed accuracy. Correct prices, availability and shipping, which Google describes as the foundation for holiday performance.
On the Shopify side, practical fixes include:
- Specific product titles that name the product type, key attribute and use case.
- Filled-in variant data (size, colour, material) rather than details buried in descriptions.
- Clear shipping and returns policies, since AI answers often surface them.
- Product descriptions that answer the questions shoppers ask ("does it fit over a fleece", "is it dishwasher safe").
A quick before-and-after shows the difference. A title like "The Harbour Jacket" tells an AI system almost nothing. "Harbour Waterproof Rain Jacket, Packable, Fits Over Layers" tells it the product type, the key attribute and the use case in one line. Pair that with a description that states the fabric, the fit and what it is not suited for, and an AI answering "a light rain jacket I can wear over a jumper" has something concrete to match. The same logic applies to every category: say plainly what the product is, who it is for and what problem it solves.
Measuring AI share of voice
Here is the gap. Google's new Merchant Center AI performance insights show your share of voice against other brands across AI Mode and AI Overviews, and are available in the US, Australia, Canada, India and New Zealand (Google, 16 September 2026). That is useful, and you should turn it on. But it only covers Google's surfaces.
Shoppers also ask ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity what to buy. Citedify covers those alongside Google AI Overviews. It asks 20 buyer-intent questions about your brand across ChatGPT (with web search), Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, records every answer, and scores mention, position, sentiment and recommendation strength into a 0 to 100 visibility score. You see which competitors are recommended instead of you and which sources the AI cites, plus a prioritised fix list, re-tested monthly.
Use Google's report for Google, and a cross-engine view for the rest. See e-commerce AI visibility, AI Overview tracking and ChatGPT Shopping for more detail.
Checklist for Shopify merchants
- Check whether your store is eligible for Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout, and whether it is on.
- Review Sales channels > Agentic and make a deliberate choice about direct checkout.
- If you keep it on, note which checkout features and tracking won't apply to those orders.
- Decide whether to test the ChatGPT Ads app, remembering that ads and organic answers are separate.
- Add conversational attributes and fill gaps in variant and policy data.
- Turn on Merchant Center AI performance insights if you are in a supported country.
- Measure recommendation share across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity as well as Google.
- Read what agentic commerce is for the wider context.
